Top 5 Reasons to Visit Puerto Rico
How I ended up in Puerto Rico!
Okay, so my week started off a little rocky when I got the crushing call about my photography workshop being cancelled in Haiti due to flooding. After a night of tears, I got busy with trying to save this trip. Thanks to American Airlines, $37 got my ticket changed from Haiti to Puerto Rico, since I already had a suitcase of summer clothes, Lol
Top 5 Reasons to Visit Puerto Rico, even at the last minute.
- Affordable Most flights will have a layover in Miami then another 2 and a half hour flight to San Juan, average price $400 round trip. The island has all of the major hotel brands including the hyatt which I used 14K points to get 5 nights for $75. Yep, I said $75
- History Rich You must tour the Spanish forts, Castillo de San Cristobal and Castillo de San Felipe El Morro as they date back to 16th century and are US historical landmarks. Visit both for $5 using your receipt.
- More beaches than you can explore in one trip. The beach local to the Hyatt San Juan City Center is Condado. Here you have access to miles of beautiful shore line. Be sure to check out Isle la Verde.
- The Food is AMAZING!! Mofongo is a must!! Trust me, I don’t eat plantains but I will eat this. Steak, pork, shrimp, variations are all a hit. Puerto Rico has something for each palate, where its Italian, Mexican, or Indian.
- The Rum!!! When I say amazing. You must try the original and flavored mojitos. Coconut, Tamarind, Passion Fruit etc..I learned that mint leaves should be smacked and left whole, never muddled. Also, the Bacardi Factory Experience is a rum must! (Read the story here) During your visit, check out La Factoria, which is rated as on the Top 50 Bars in the World.
A Few Things To Note:
- You must use a regular taxi from the airport however,Uber makes staying in the city center very convenient, with a typical ride to Old San Juan averaging $5-$7.
- No US passport needed
- Explore other areas of the island such as the Rainforest and the Glowing Waters.
Overall Puerto Rico is a paradise escape to white sand beaches in a history rich country. Note, that I am only sharing my experience, and I encourage you to use this as a foundation for creating your own memories!! If you’ve been, please share your trip favorites for other travelers.
