Oktoberfest in Helen, Georgia..Day Trip
The fall is my favorite time of year to visit the North Georgia area and this weekend, I did just that. The city of Helen is the home of Georgia’s Oktoberfest festival September 8th-October 30 annually. Helen is about 90 miles from downtown Atlanta and makes for a great, inexpensive, family-friendly, day trip. This quaint city, nestled in the Georgia mountains became popular due to a Gold Rush during the 1820’s and named after a late railroad surveyor’s daughter. It is designed to be a replica of a Bavarian Alps town in Germany. Today, more than 2 million people visit Helen annually and it’s known for their local artist and authentic German cuisine.
My first stop was the Wrights Wood working shop. Run by Mr. Wright, he’s only one of 12 artist in the United States that craft wood bowl by hand. Starting at $100, these bowls are crafted as family heirlooms and can be engraved. He even gave my friend a trash bag of wood chips for his smoker.
The Hansel and Gretel Gourmet Candy Shop– opened in 1973 by Dave and Janet Jones specializing in all things candy (handmade). The Freeze Cream Shop – You pick your base; regular or coconut and your toppings. It’s frozen, mixed and rolled right before your eyes. The Habersham Winery (view the full post here)
I rounded out the day with a delicious dinner of my favorite fish…North Georgia Trout at Bodensee!! Authentic German Cuisine
